The Economic Side of the Pro-Life Movement
Introduction by Don Chapin
It was a much more detailed article quite some time ago about this same nun’s (Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B.) position on the pro-life movement that “rang my bell.” Being a Catholic nun, there is NO WAY she can advocate abortion, but her arguments countering the emotional, non-spiritually based position of the pro-life movement make exceedingly good sense and clearly demonstrates the conflicting positions of most pro-lifers. Most of those who are deeply committed pro-life are also strongly against the welfare programs that typically provide life-saving assistance to the poorer segments of our society. It’s hard to reasonably argue BOTH positions at the same time.
WHY?
The majority of those women who would be denied their choice — if an abortion IS their choice — are being denied their free will. This is a spiritually significant No-No on this free-will planet. But this is addressed on another page of this website.
Sociologically, it has been clearly demonstrated in various studies that the vast majority of these women, even if the biological father is standing by her, are on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder. Many are most likely on welfare already. The cost of raising a child is easily researched on the internet and is in the thousands of dollars.
Contrary to her more well-off sisters, if this young woman or couple is working to advance their economic status to get off that bottom rung, thereby also working their way into higher tax brackets to help support the war machine of this imperialistic government (see militarytruth.org), then are forced by that same government to divert their self-improvement efforts to raise a child as an imposed primary responsibility, then they will very possibly give up their self improvement efforts. The result is most probably additional generations of lower-income residents and even additional welfare applicants, generation after generation.
Contrary to the pro-lifers AND the all-male Catholic Church hierarchy, these front-line nuns, as pointed out in the following article, have seen exactly that scenario time and again. ~ Don Chapin
So, what is the obvious answer? The article below leads off with this:
In one simple quote, Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. sums up the hypocrisy of many in the ‘pro-life’ movement:
“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”
